I've started a nursery

Not with children, but with plants... I decided after my Mom passed away in May of last year, I would go back to my first love of gardens and start a small perennials nursery. It always has been my perpetual dream of running a nursery business and having friends to help me grow it. We're doing it! We put up a couple of greenhouses this winter and have lots of seedlings started. Check out my website at Sage Advice Nursery or follow my blog at Sage Advice Nursery Blog. I am growing perennials, herbs and groundcovers for local sale at the farmers markets near Metro Detroit.

It is satisfying work. One works with their hands to create something and gets to enjoy the weather in all seasons. I am employing one good friend who stands by me through thick and thin. We work hard in all kinds of weather getting wet in the rain and getting cold in the snow but we feel good about it. It is so rewarding to see those little plants and seeds grow up into beautiful flowers and plants.

Garden Dreaming

Woke up to 6 inches of snow today and starting to dream of the garden this year. Have asked a friend to build a cold frame for early seed starting as I have no space indoors for seeds - and the dog eats the soil! Have also asked him to build a garden arch out of iron or re-rod but that may take some time - air temps need to warm up before he can weld properly.

Ordered seed catalogs - Seed Savers Exchange, Seeds of Change and Johnny's Selected Seeds - all favorites that had dropped me off the list... Usually I buy transplants at the local Pontiac Farmers Market but am itching to get some seeds started.

There's a real magic about growing a plant from seed that never fails to amaze me. The tiny seed sprouts and grows leaves and becomes a beautiful productive plant. I feel like a fourth grader with a school project!
